2012 Annual Sporting Dinner Thursday 19 April

Our seventeenth Annual Dinner is being held at the Glasgow Hilton on Thursday 19 April 2012. We have a superb line-up of speakers for the Dinner:-


Dame Kelly Holmes - who, following early promise as an athlete, joined the army and became a physical training instructor
before returning to athletics and making history at the 2004 Olympics in Athens by winning two middle distance Gold medals. As we all look forward to the London 2012 Olympics, Dame Kelly will be able to give us a personal insight into what the athletes will experience, including those who will win gold.


Geoff Miller - who spent 20 years on the professional cricket circuit representing Derbyshire, Essex and England and is now one of the top speakers on the after-dinner circuit.


Gary Marshall - a third generation Yorkshire comedian with a unique and highly entertaining style.

Centre team to raise funds by cycling around Cumbrae on 18 September 2011

On Sunday 18 September 2011 the Friends of the Beatson Centre team will be cycling around the Isle of Cumbrae to raise funds for Friends of the Beatson.

Friends of the Beatson funds raised tops £2 million

Last night, Thursday, 28 April, Friends of the Beatson funds raised topped £2 million at their 16th Annual Sporting Dinner at the Glasgow Hilton, which are essential for their ongoing work within the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre.

At last night's Dinner, hosted by Brian Donald and sponsored by Barclays Corporate, the speakers were Bob Champion, founder of the Bob Champion Cancer Trust and winner of the 1981 Grand National; Gordon Smith, football pundit and former Chief Executive of the Scottish Football Association; and Willie Allan, the well known after-dinner speaker.

A cheque for £25,000 was also presented at the Dinner by the family of late footballer Tommy Burns, who died of skin cancer in 2008.

Ian Dickson, Chairman of Friends of the Beatson said:

"We are delighted by the success of last night's Dinner. Each year the generosity of those who attend is astounding and we are hugely grateful. All of the funds raised will go directly to the Friends of the Beatson Centre."

"Everything we do is funded through events and charitable donations and I would like to thank all of our many supporters for their generosity."

Tommy Burns Skin Cancer Trust £ 25,000 donation to Friends of the Beatson

On 27 April, in the run up to the third anniversary of Tommy Burns' death from skin cancer, Jenna and Emma Burns, daughters of the late Tommy Burns presented a cheque for £25,000 to Friends of the Beatson at Celtic Park.

The Tommy Burns Skin Cancer Trust was founded in 2009 by the family of Tommy Burns after the Celtic legend lost his battle with skin cancer on 15 May, 2008. Burns battled melanoma skin cancer for two years after his diagnosis was announced by Celtic Football Club in 2006.

The donation was also be made in memory of Ronnie Coyle, friend of Tommy Burns and former Celtic and Raith Rovers player who sadly passed away on 12 April this year, after suffering from leukaemia.

Jenna Burns, daughter of Tommy Burns ,said:

"After countless numbers of people have worked so hard to raise such a great deal of money for skin cancer, we are extremely proud to present this cheque to Friends of the Beatson. The work that they do is unparalleled in Scotland and we cannot think of anyone more deserving."

"We all hope that they can continue the great work they are doing and that the funds raised go some way towards helping them improve the lives of cancer sufferers in Scotland."

"We are extremely grateful that the Tommy Burns Skin Cancer Trust has chosen to present us with such a sizeable donation. The loss of Tommy Burns affected many football fans in general and all Celtic fans and this cheque will go a long way in supporting others who are suffering."

Friends of the Beatson Pro-Am Golf Event 23rd June 2011

A second highly successful Pro-Am golf event was held on Thursday 23 June 2011 at East Renfrewshire Golf Club.

Superbly organised by Stewart Russell, who is the PGA Professional at East Renfrewshire Golf Club, the event saw 16 teams accompanied by a PGA professional enjoying a round of golf and a full programme of entertainment.

The event raised £9,500 for Friends of the Beatson and our thanks are due to Stewart, his fellow professionals, East Renfrewshire Golf Club and everyone who took part in a most enjoyable day.
