"when a friend approached me to volunteer at the Centre, I really thought it wouldn't be for me. I spent some time there and found it to be such a positive and uplifting experience that I've never looked back. That was September 2010..."

Friends of the Beatson funds raised tops £2 million

Last night, Thursday, 28 April, Friends of the Beatson funds raised topped £2 million at their 16th Annual Sporting Dinner at the Glasgow Hilton, which are essential for their ongoing work within the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre.

At last night's Dinner, hosted by Brian Donald and sponsored by Barclays Corporate, the speakers were Bob Champion, founder of the Bob Champion Cancer Trust and winner of the 1981 Grand National; Gordon Smith, football pundit and former Chief Executive of the Scottish Football Association; and Willie Allan, the well known after-dinner speaker.

A cheque for £25,000 was also presented at the Dinner by the family of late footballer Tommy Burns, who died of skin cancer in 2008.

Ian Dickson, Chairman of Friends of the Beatson said:

"We are delighted by the success of last night's Dinner. Each year the generosity of those who attend is astounding and we are hugely grateful. All of the funds raised will go directly to the Friends of the Beatson Centre."

"Everything we do is funded through events and charitable donations and I would like to thank all of our many supporters for their generosity."
